About Coastal Shred Academy

We’re a crew of passionate surfers who care deeply about creating meaningful, positive experiences in the ocean. After more than a decade of teaching surfing around the world, we learned something simple and powerful: people progress best when they feel relaxed, supported, and genuinely stoked. Coastal Shred Academy was built around that belief. Sessions where time slows down, confidence builds naturally, and the ocean feels like a place you truly belong.

Coastal Shred Academy began in 2022, following years of teaching in Australia, France, and Spain before finally settling on the wild west coast of Canada. Tofino felt like home. We knew we wanted to build a surf school where learning feels personal, the energy is welcoming, and progression happens without pressure. Our focus has always been on real experience, not chasing industry trends.

Rooted in community from day one

Before CSA officially existed, its foundation was already forming in Tofino through local surf and skate programs for youth. For years, we’ve partnered with Wickaninnish Community School and the District of Tofino to create programs that families trust and kids can’t wait to return to. That community-first approach guides how we teach visitors today, with the same care and attention we bring to our local programs.

Whether you’re catching your very first wave or learning to read the ocean with more confidence, our small-group lessons are designed to help you feel supported, encouraged, and excited to paddle back out. We focus on clear instruction, personalized feedback, and creating an environment where learning feels natural and enjoyable.

Boardsports are in our DNA

Outside the water, our roots run deep in skateboarding. Aaron, our founder, is a lifelong skateboarder and a CASI (Canadian Association of Snowboard Instructors) evaluator. That cross-training in balance, flow, and technique shapes the way we coach. Patience, clarity, and a deep love for progression are at the core of every session.

Family-built, community-driven

Today, Aaron lives on the West Coast with his wife Rachel, their son Zen, and daughter Mazzy. Coastal Shred Academy is a family-built surf school shaped by community, creativity, and a genuine love for this coastline. We’re grateful to grow here and excited to share the experience with you.
