Get ready to catch your first wave with Coastal Shred Academy, Tofino’s most fun, friendly, and safe surf school. Whether it’s your first time or your fifth, our lessons are designed to help you learn fast, feel confident, and have an unforgettable time on Vancouver Island’s most beautiful beaches.

What to Expect in Your Surf Lesson
Here’s a quick look at how your surf session flows:
1. Meet at the Beach in Tofino
We’ll meet at your lesson’s beach location, usually one of Tofino’s best beginner-friendly surf spots like Chesterman Beach or Cox Bay. You’ll be welcomed by your instructor, handed your wetsuit, boots and all gear and we will explain how to put it on, and point you towards the change room.
2. Land Lesson and Warm-Up
Before hitting the water, we’ll go over surf basics: paddling technique, pop-up drills, ocean awareness, and beach safety. Our instructors keep it light, fun, and easy to understand, whilst sharing super key knowledge for whatever level you’re at.
3. Hit the Waves
Then it’s time to surf. We’ll head into the water together, catching your first waves in waist-deep water (Or whatever our goal is for the lesson). Your instructor will be right beside you, helping you paddle, push into waves, and celebrate your first rides.
4. Personalized Tips and Feedback
As you gain confidence, we’ll give you pointers on timing, positioning, and reading the waves, all in a positive, relaxed vibe that makes learning easy and safe.
5. Wrap-Up and Local Recommendations
After your session, we’ll chat about what you learned, share a few surf tips for next time, answer any questions, take some pics (If you want) and recommend Tofino’s best coffee shops, local eats, and surf spots to explore after your lesson. We will share a little of that local knowledge.
